A monthly price index for UK PC components, built from our own Amazon UK price tracking. Every figure compares the same products month over month, so it measures prices rather than which products happened to be listed.

How this is calculated
We record a price observation for every product we track whenever its listed price changes on Amazon UK. To turn that into an index we take each product’s mean price within a month, then compare consecutive months.
A product contributes to a month only when we hold observations for it in both of the months being compared, and it is only ever compared against itself. Monthly changes are then chained together to give the cumulative figure.
This matters more than it sounds. Averaging every listing in one month against every listing in a later month does not measure prices — it measures which products entered and left the catalogue. On our own storage data the naive method reports a 2.5% rise where the matched basket reports 9.6%.
Months with fewer than 20 matched products are excluded as too noisy to publish. If a category has a gap, its series stops at the gap rather than chaining across it, which would silently attribute two months of movement to one.
Limitations. These are listed prices on Amazon UK for the products we track. This is not a national retail price index, it excludes other retailers and the used market entirely, and it does not capture discounts applied at checkout. The all-components figure weights every tracked product equally, so it leans towards the categories we track most densely rather than reflecting what a typical buyer spends.
